Background:
Aljyoon became, in no small way, a ‘real star’ as she was tagged coinciding with the launch ceremony of the 2012 Dhow Race organised in Sir Bu Nair by our partners the Emirates Marine Environment Group. Members of the Sharjah Royal Family, race participants as well as a local TV channel came to witness us tagging her, and everybody watched her as she made her way back to the water. She measured 74 cm in curved carapace length and carries a Monel tag L1121 so that we can identify her when she returns to nest in the future. With the generous sponsorship of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, she is also now another of the turtles which is sending signals to help conservationists and wildlife managers design suitable conservation strategies, as she informs us of her migration routes and feeding grounds.
