Background:
Asha, a female hawksbill sponsored by Nokia, emerged quite early on a warm dry evening up at Fuwairit beach in Qatar, when she was spotted by rangers from the Qatar University turtle monitoring programme. She had a carapace clear of barnacles - quite a rarity in the Gulf, and meausred 73.5 cm in curved carapace length. She was tagged with Monel flipper tags (Nos. QU0423 and QU0424) so that she can be identified when she returns to nest, and also with a satelllite transmitter so that we are able to track her migration and determine the location of her customary feeding grounds. This will provide the data upon which the government can design focussed conservation actions.
