Background:
Laura Bora was the second turtle we tagged for the 2012 season as part of our efforts to understand migrations and feeding grounds of hawksbill turtles in the Gulf region, and is sponsored by Gulftainer. She was spotted at about 10pm, and after laying eggs and being measured (she was 85 cm long), she was tagged with a metal flipper tag (number R48282) by the rangers from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs. Laura Bora came out of the water while our team was tagging another turtle, and then nested under a bush and got trapped there for a while trying to get out. A feisty turtle, she almost escaped from the box before we got the satellite transmitter attached! We gave her a shiny new satellite transmitter and let her go her early in the morning. Along with the 30 other turtles we will track this year, she will provide us with important information on where turtles go after nesting, so that we are in a position to develop conservation programmes for these areas.
